The Winnipeg Winter Club Open Squash Championships ran this past week here at the WWC from November 1st- 5th We had a good number of players from both the club and overall in the event which was great to see. Several of our WWC members either won or made the finals of their events. Congrats to all who played and here are a few of the WWC member highlights.
Cole LaCap (WWC) defeated Josh Blatt (WWC) in a great 5 game battle in the final of the Men's B event. Fredrick Russell(WWC) defeated Owen Borland(WWC) in the Men's D final. In the men's 40+ final Jonathan Borland (WWC) came back from two games down to win 12-10 in the fifth over Jared Niessen. Tom Brown(WWC) took home the Men's 50 final, while Will Znidarec and Fredrick Russell and 1st and 2nd in the Junior U15 event and Owen Borland and Emily Hargraves were 1st and 2nd in the U13. All are from the WWC.

The Squash department will now be focusing its' attention on the Winnipeg Winter Club Women's Open, a stop on the Women's Pro Tour. The tournament runs in the new year form January 31st- February 4th and will feature several of the top players from around the world. Many of our past champions are currently occupying the top 20 in the world rankings. Last year we had our first Canadian winner of our event, with Samantha Cornett taking home the title. The majority of our competitive A and B junior groups from the club will be travelling to Edmonton, Alberta this weekend to compete in the Alberta Junior Jesters, which is one of the core events on the national junior calendar. The tournament will be held at one of our affiliate clubs, the Royal Glenora Club. If you happen to be in Edmonton this weekend, come on down and cheer on our group. This Saturdays's Munchkin Squash group from 11:50-12:30pm will not be held as the club will be opening at 1:00 pm on Saturday with it being Remembrance Day.
